Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb, who together comprise the guitar duo Loren & Mark, come from thousands of miles apart — the former from Syracuse, the latter from New Zealand and ending up in the U.S. to go to school in North Carolina.
But they met right here in Ohio at former Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen’s music camp, Fur Peace Ranch, in Meigs County in bucolic, rural southeastern Ohio. They both attended a workshop there in 2005 and stayed in touch. Their paths kept crossing until they officially formed their duo in 2010.
Their style draws on jazz, bluegrass and traditional country, influenced by the acoustic thumb-picking style of such players as Merle Travis, Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins. Loren sings as well with Mark providing harmonies. They’ve toured all over the world together and released three studio albums, including their new One-to-One, which came out in February, and a live album. Catch the duo at Nighttown. Tickets are $15.
