UCLA Professor Talks About Using Math to Predict Crime @MusicBoxCle Science Mondays

Mon 3/14 @ 7PM

Educational presentations — panels, lectures, discussions — in bars are getting to be quite a thing in Cleveland since the Happy Dog in Gordon Square started doing it regularly years ago.

The latest to launch such programs is the Music Box Supper Club, which now has its monthly Science Café Mondays. This month, it will connect a subject many consider dry — math — to one that’s more titillating — crime.

In “The Mathematics of Crime,” noted California based expert on the topic, Dr. Andrea Bertozzi, a professor of applied mathematics at UCLA, will talk about how mathematicians have developed a “predictive policing” computer program that figures out what areas are most likely to be hubs for criminal activity, allowing police officers to be deployed in a more strategic fashion.

Doors open at 5:30pm for those who want to get a good seat, get something to eat and drink and hang out before the talk, which takes place from 7-8pm. The bar will be open until 8:45. It’s free.
