Booty

There’s plenty to go around, and the spoils are sweet. Use our apps if you wish, where you can help yourself to the whole kit and caboodle, or glance below for just a few choice pickings.

Growing up in Parma, our idea of a decent haul included beer, polka & Polish food, so the rising popularity of Dyngus Day warms our cockles. Giving the boot to urban blight, the Red Line Greenway needs volunteers to help green the city. A treasure chest of all that’s good, Mitchell’s Fine Chocolates will be missed… unless. Helping you survive in style, our new fashionista fits you out for our bipolar spring season.

Morticia’s Chair will kick ass at Pat’s in the Flats, while Faure’s Requiem descends on Trinity. BW’s superstar musical theater seniors shake it right before their NYC showcase, while the Wine Spot celebrates Van Gogh with absinthe. The ghost of Woody Shaw appears at BOP STOP and 2731 hosts a foreign exchange photo contest, while Terrence Spivey brings the black to Tremont with Bootycandy.

Everyone seems mad as hell these days, so a screening of Network at the Capitol might be just the ticket. Of course, some just can’t get enough boodle. Read Mansfield and C. Ellen Connally as they excoriate Cle City Councilman TJ Dow for bad behavior. Shake it. Or get the boot. –Thomas Mulready

Many area theater lovers were distressed to hear that Karamu’s artistic director Terrence Spivey, who restored much of that theater’s luster, was let go recently in a cost-cutting move. The good news is he’s said he’ll stay active in the area theater scene. He already had a project in the pipeline: directing Bootycandy, a flamboyant satire of black gay culture, at Tremont’s convergence-continuum theater.

CoolCleveland’s video cam caught up with Spivey to talk about c-c’s first production with a mostly black cast. Fri 3/25-Sat 4/15.

Cleveland’s signature Eastern European ethnic culture is rising again, with new festivals and events such as Dyngus Day. Based on a Polish festival celebrating the end of Lent and the coming of spring, it’s an all-day party that showcases Polish food, beer and the new generation of local polka musicians as well as polka veterans.

Now in its 6th year, the festival has grown from its original Gordon Square base to encompass Ohio City and Tremont as well. A shuttle will take you to all the locations. CoolCleveland’s John Benson tells us what’s going on. Mon 3/28.

The Red Line Greenway is an ambitious project to create a three-mile recreational greenspace corridor along the near west side rapid line. its roots go back nearly 40 years when the Rotary Club began to landscape a bit of land next to the West 25th Street Rapid Station.

Bill Mitchell’s father opened his first candy store in Cleveland Heights more than 75 years ago. Bill joined the family business which he continued to run after his father’s 2000 death, making the luscious hand-dipped chocolates several generations of Cleveland’s have enjoyed.

But after his mother died last year he began to think about his retirement, and he’s ready to get on with the rest of his life. He’s offering the business for sale but if he gets no takers, these exquisite chocolates will be history after Memorial Day.

CoolCleveland columnist C. Ellen Connally, an attorney and former judge, warns that if Dow isn’t careful about crossing the line into bribery and extortion, he could end up in prison like one of his predecessors.

TJ Dow is not the first elected official who doesn’t want anyone around him that might be smarter than he is. Many other half-bright politicians feel the same way. But the real bright politicos always want to surround themselves with…

* The Endorsement Scam Every election cycle, political campaigns pass out lots of money to people who solemnly assure the candidates they can “turn out votes” for them. A longstanding joke on Cleveland’s east side…

* The Politics of “No!” When people -politicians included- are either (a) afraid, or (b) want to shake someone down, they simply dig their heels, in no matter the facts, and start flat-out lying through their teeth….

* TJ Dow Is Twisting the Truth Behind the apartment building is vacant land that Case wants to build a new dental clinic on. But Dow wants a shiny new office for himself, so he’s demanding that…
