The University of Akron’s School of Music presents its Kulas Concert Series, a chance to hear a variety of outstanding musicians. Its upcoming concert, in collaboration with the Akron-based Tuesday Musical Association, features a musician who performs frequently to appreciative audiences here while starting to build an international reputation: violinist Jinjoo Cho.
Jinjoo moved to Cleveland from Seoul, Korea at the age of 14 to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music, becoming concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. She also received her bachelors and masters degrees from CIM. She’s won numerous important competitions and has a passion for music education as well, teaching at Oberlin and founding a chamber music program for Cleveland high school and college students. Now at age 26, she’s a real star in the making, preparing for her Carnegie Hall debut.
She’ll be accompanied for this program by her frequent collaborater, pianist HyunSoo Kim. HyunSoo is also a CIM graduate, and now teaches there and at Kent State while in heavy demand as an accompanist for singers and instrumentalists. For this program, the two will play works by contemporary American composer Joan Tower and other contemporary composers. The concert, taking place at UA’s Guzzetta Recital Hall, is $25 for the general public, free for UA students.
