Sat 2/20 @ 9AM-3PM
This Saturday, Famicos Foundation will welcome more than 100 students around the Greater Cleveland area for their first annual Glenville Youth Wellness Summit at Glenville High School.
Part of an ongoing initiative to enrich the community and advocate for youth in the city of Cleveland, the Glenville Youth Wellness Summit contributes to a series of education-based programming and events that provide students with mentorship and life skills that can be applied beyond primary and high school.
Focusing on five areas of wellness (emotional, intellectual, physical, social and occupational), this year’s summit workshops include: Power vs. Privilege—Identity Awareness; Dollars & Sense: Tools to Meet Your Goals and Manage Your Money; Idea to Business: Intro to Entrepreneurship: the Youth Summit Shark Tank; and more than 11 additional workshops for students to choose from.
In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with community leaders during the 2016 Youth Advocacy Panel Lunch, held midday between workshops. Navigating away from your typical Q&A panel, the lunch is designed to nourish the body and soul with healthy eating options and conversational probes that encourage students to speak up about the issues most important to them to those with familiar faces and experiences. This year’s panel includes: DJ Keenan “K-Nyce” Williams, Z107.9; Ja’Ovvoni Garrison, skateboarder and community activist; Antwan Steele, founder of NLD+ Group; Dr. Sherrae M. Hayes, founder of Dr. Rae & Associates, LTD; Ashley N. Hawthorne, M.Ed., educator and community activist in the Cleveland Municipal School District; and Anthony Body, Good Neighbor Ambassador Supervisor at Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District.
“Our passion is Cleveland. This means our work has to be rooted in the sustainability of our communities, and it starts with ensuring future generations have the tools they need for success.” said Kathrine Morris, Glenville Youth Wellness Summit organizer and Neighborhood Engagement Specialist at Famicos Foundation. “By providing students with resources and workshops on wellness, we’re not only creating a healthy environment and future for our youth, but for the city of Cleveland.”
Morris added that the summit has already begun opening the doors for leadership opportunities to students working behind the scenes and anticipates students attending the event will benefit from their resources as well. Famicos Foundation hopes the summit will encourage students to invest further into their community by getting involved, particularly with their Youth Advisory Board. The board not only provides education on urban planning but gives members the opportunity to spearhead initiatives they feel most passionate about — from building community gardens and growing fresh produce to after-school programs.
The Glenville Youth Wellness Summit is free to students 12-18 years old. Prospective attendees must register at MyGlenville.com/Register by Fri 2/19 to attend. More information can be found on their Facebook page at Facebook.com/GlenvilleYouthSummit.
