Former Bowie Drummer Woody Woodmansey & Producer Tony Visconti Bring Their Project Holy Holy to Cleveland

Woody Woodmansey was David Bowie’s drummer from 1970-1973, playing in his legendary Spiders from Mars band. Since then he’s led a number of his own groups. Most recently, that’s been Holy Holy, an all-star band formed by popular demand to play the pre-Ziggy Stardust LP The Man Who Sold The World that was his first project with Bowie. (It’s named after an abandoned 1971 Bowie tune).

Holy Holy also includes, on bass, producer Tony Visconti, who had a longtime relationship with Bowie going all the way back to his 1970 The Man Who Sold the World up to his just-released ★ (pronounced Blackstar), which he co-produced with Bowie (and including seminal albums like 1974’s Diamond Dogs, 1975’s Young Americans and 1980’s Scary Monsters.)

Needless to say, Bowie’s recent death has made them a hot ticket, and fortuitously, they happened to have been booked to play Cleveland on their current tour. Despite the offbeat venue (the Odeon in the East Bank of the Flats — yes, it is still open occasionally).

The band, which also features vocalist Glenn Gregory of 1980s synth pop band Heaven 17, is playing The Man Who Sold the World in its entirety, along with other Bowie tunes from the era when Woodmansey was in his band.

The opening act is, appropriately, Cleveland’s self-dubbed “cinematic pop” band The Modern Electric, whose best known tune is “David Bowie (Save Us All).” They demonstrate the persistence of Bowie’s influence and how it can be creatively interpreted in the hands of another generation of twentysomethings.

It will probably sell out, but if it’s not, tickets are $20.
