While larger theaters run fall to spring, some of our more adventurous alternative ensembles follow the calendar year, while still refusing to follow tradition. Two-piece bands are hot as ever, and this week By Light We Loom debut their new release and their new stripped-down lineup.
If you’re a fan of vinyl, Musica in Akron is presenting a swap & spin. And along those lines, I’m getting ready to host a vinyl Brunch With Bowie at the BOP STOP later in the month: make your reservations now. If you just can’t wait, Blue Arrow is celebrating his birthday on Friday. We’re talking with fans who happen to be writers about opportunities in CoolCleveland all around us in 2016.
We always follow artists, entrepreneurs and immigrants, cause they are creating the new world we will live in. This week, MOCA & Happy Dog at the ET are doing the same, featuring immigrant-themed programs. Fandom 216 gives you a passport and a reason to turn off the sports and get on your bike. Mansfield is on fire in the new year. And we’re his biggest fans. –Thomas Mulready

While many prominent area theaters have seasons that follow the traditional fall-to-spring schedule, some smaller and more adventurous ensembles follow the calendar year. These theaters – Mamai, convergence-continuum and Talespinner Children’s Theatre – have recently announced an array of intriguing offerings for 2016.
They range from classics to contemporary works, folklore to black comedy. Check out what’s in store for local theater lovers in the coming year.

Cleveland is known for its rabid loyalty to and identification with its sports teams. And their record helps make Cleveland synonymous with “losing.”
What this relationship means to the region will be explored by 20 local artists in Fandom 216, an exhibit taking place at three area galleries. It kicks off at Waterloo Arts this weekend, where you’ll also have the chance to get a passport to encourage you to turn off the TV, stop watching the teams and start bicycling. Sun 1/10.
Vocalist Shanna Delaney and guitarist Eric Ling are the husband-and-wife duo who fronted folk rock sextet Bethesda which a mere two years ago was tapped as one of the area’s rising stars.
But keeping together six members with diverging lives proved difficult. So Delaney and Ling stripped down to a twosome called By Light We Loom. With a new sound and new EP debuting at a Beachland Tavern show, they’re starting to recapture some of Bethesda’s former acclaim. Sat 1/9.
Stacia Darrell has her daughter enrolled at the Music Settlement’s Pre-K Early Childhood program.
Stacia not only appreciates the 5-Star Step Up To Quality rating that the Music Settlement has achieved, but also the focus on the arts. “That’s what I like most about this program is the diversity, and all of the different experiences. They enjoy the arts here, the music, the acting, the creativity and reaching out to the student’s imagination…”
The Music Settlement’s Early Childhood Open House will take place Sun 1/10/16 from 1-2:30PM, and is open to parents of prospective preschoolers. TheMusicSettlement.org.
Talespinner Children’s Theatre’s lineup of productions features plays written or adapted by folklore by local writers. But now they’re putting out a call for new Cleveland-area writers to submit plays for a workshop process to take place in July.
Each accepted play will receive two weeks of intensive work, and possibly be considered for a full production during a future Talespinner season. The submission deadline is March 1. We’ve got all the details.

The charges against comedian/actor Bill Cosby – that he drugged and raped dozens of women – have evoked a wide range of responses, from horror to disbelief that such a beloved performer could possibly be guilty. CoolCleveland writers C. Ellen Connally & Mansfield Frazier aren’t that sympathetic.
“If Cosby had not spent the last 25 years being so totally sanctimonious about black society and the failings of our disadvantaged youth, he could elicit a bit more sympathy for himself. But for years he’s traveled around the country blaming black folks for their own disadvantaged condition,” they write.
By now it’s abundantly clear that, despite virtually any amount of additional training, many police officers are going to carry their built-in biases with them when they don their uniforms, holster their weapons and go out into the mean streets…
