Through 1/3/2016
Lake Metroparks has a holiday season of special fun on the schedule of its Penitentiary Glen Nature Center during its Wild Days of Winter.
The centerpiece is a life-sized Candyland game board, where kids can draw cards and learn about nature, moving through the seasons of the year as they move from space to space. There are a lot more activities as well, both indoors and out. They include scavenger hunts, crafts including making a “s’morenament,” chickadee feeding and bird-watching and nature exhibits to explore. There are eight and a half miles of hiking trails and snow shoes for rent to walk the Peppermint Trail. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments at the Snowshoe Lodge and do some holiday gift shopping at the Nature Store.
It’s free and it’s going on every day from noon-5pm through 1/3/16, except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. And each Saturday, a different free special activity will be featured from 1-3pm. Here’s the schedule:
November 28 – Enjoy s‘mores and campfire
December 5 – Discover apples and berries
December 12 – Ride trains (weather permitting)
December 19 – Taste sweet maple syrup
December 26 – Sip peppermint hot chocolate
January 2 – Learn about honey and beekeeping
