Sun 9/20 @ 3PM
The Barking Spider Tavern is a former coachhouse, tucked away behind the houses on Juniper Road, located on the Case Western Reserve campus. It’s a cozy, casual getaway that books live music 363 days a year, mostly rootsy genres such as bluegrass, folk, country, old-time, blues and jazz.
The venue was opened almost 30 years ago by the late Martin Juredine, a shaggy bearded man whose affable demeanor and support for local talent made him beloved in the community. He died in 2011, and it’s now run by his daughter Jenna, continuing the same policies — eclectic bookings featuring both regulars and new artists, usually two or three a night, jam sessions and collaborations, no cover charge/pass the hat for the musicians — that have given the Spider its distinctive flavor and role in the Cleveland music scene.
The club celebrates its 29th anniversary this week with a birthday party that will last from 3pm to midnight. There’ll be BBQ and you’re invited to bring a dish to share, potluck-style. There will, of course, be a diverse lineup of live music. Hot Jazz Seven plays at 3pm; horn-heavy blues/jump/swing bands takes the stage at 6pm; and Hymn 4 Her, featuring Maggie and Pierce, closes things at 9pm.
Nope — no cover today either. Drop a little something in the hat.
