Sat 9/5
Mon 9/7
Labor Day weekend is a time to reflecting on how labor unions have benefited all of us, whether we are union members or not. The AFL-CIO picnic at James Day Park in Parma on Sat 9/5 was a time for both education and fun, with booth from unions such as teachers, home healthcare workers, sheet metal workers and pipe fitters providing information on how their unions contribute to the community. Meanwhile, kids were entertained by a face painter, balloon artist and clowns, and there was food, drink and ice cream for everyone. Politicians mingled with the crowd including former Congressman Dennis Kucinich and county executive Armond Budish.
Budish was also on the reviewing stand on Mon 9/7 with Congresswoman Marcia Fudge for the annual 11th Congressional District Labor Day Parade, featuring campaigning politicians, city agencies, labor unions, social service groups, fraternal organizations, drill teams and high school bands. It made its way down two miles of Kinsman Road before ending up at Luke Easter Park where the congresswoman, joined by his family, paid tribute to the former congressman, Lou Stokes, who started the parade and who died last month. Signs and badges along the parade route showed that he was fondly remembered in the community.
