River’s Edge on Rocky River Drive just north of Kamm’s Corners is not just about religion, although it is connected with the Catholic Church. It’s a place where people find their way in life; labelling what the 10-year-old community does would do it a disservice. Most visitors to the beautiful grounds say that it’s peaceful, and if that’s one of the things you seek (and who doesn’t?), step out of your everyday reality and experience what it has to offer.
As part of the free summer lecture series, author Jan Phillips, a well-known and well-respected workshop leader and writer, makes an appearance this Thu 7/9, at 7PM. Her topic, “Finding the On Ramp to Your Spiritual Path,” is also the name of one of her books.
Phillips’ guidebook on the spiritual journey touches upon many philosophies and belief systems. The author has traveled all over the world, and although raised as a Catholic, her spiritual journey has been influenced by the Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim traditions and cultures. She merges the dualities of East and West and her writing, which includes a number of other books, is as dynamic and wise as the woman who writes and speaks to admiring audiences. In this book, the stories she tells suggest that we need to go deeper and further on our spiritual path and, in the end, discover that the journey is everything.
River’s Edge’s mission is to support people in their personal transformations, whether they know they’re on a journey or have decided to pretend they’re not. “By supporting individuals on their journeys to wholeness, we can contribute to creating a more whole world!” River’s Edge is celebrating 10 years “of transforming people’s lives one person at a time!” with a gala event on 7/18 at 5PM, which will include the music of the Flipside and Alex Bevan, food and drinks included. The donation is $60.
In addition to lectures, the community provides workshops, classes and other programming that will bring you into the present and help promote the health of mind, body and spirit. The 40-acre grounds above the Rocky River surround a century-old building which has been supplemented by newer and brighter facilities, with rooms available to people who just need some respite, a small chapel, a large sanctuary where Sunday services are held, an indoor pool, galleries of original art, a library, a decent cafeteria and meeting rooms. The programming is designed to help people navigate transitions and become more positive and accepting. It is truly an oasis for yoga, Tai Chi, meditation, poetry readings and author appearances.
If you can’t make it to one of the free summer lectures this month, check out “The Power of the Human/Divine Voice” with Brother Michael Laratonda on Thu 8/20, at 7PM. For more information on what River’s Edge is all about, go to riversedgecleveland.com.
