For 14 years, Tremont’s Arts in August series has been bringing some of Cleveland’s best theater, dance and music ensembles to perform outdoors in the neighborhood’s Lincoln Park — for free. It’s a win/win situation. People who might not be familiar with the groups have the chance to sample area arts offerings, and the groups get to share their talents with a brand new audience.
This year, the series will feature nine evenings, with the first two by the same group: the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival. Each year, this ensemble does a pair of shows, performing each for free at venues around the city. They’ll close down their second production, and their season, when they present two performances of the dark romance/comedy The Merchant of Venice.
The rest of the schedule includes Cleveland Public Theatre’s STEP (Fri 8/7), the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra with vocalist Evelyn Wright (Sat 8/8), Inlet Dance Theatre (Thu 8/13), GroundWorks DanceTheater (Fri 8/14), Verb Ballets (Sat 8/15), Harmonia (Fri 8/21) and Cleveland Opera Theatre (Sat 8/22).
Bring a blanket or chair and some munchies, and settle back to enjoy some of the groups that have made the northeast Ohio arts scene so vibrant.
