Blues, Jazz, Soul & More Collide When Chicago’s Claudettes Play @MusicBoxCle

Claudettes

Tue 7/7 @ 8PM

The Claudettes, out of Chicago, have an interesting history and an equally distinctive sound. Originally a duo consisting of pianist Johnny Iguana and drummer Michael Caskey — both experienced musicians who had played behind blues legends like Koko Taylor, Junior Wells and Otis Rush, as well as in jazz, rock and even a Balkan fusion group — they established themselves playing dive bars in the boondocks outside Chicago for a bar owner named Claudette, who gave them her own name. In 2013, they released their debut album Infernal Piano Plot … HATCHED!, which provided a taste of their unique twist on their base music, the blues.

Last year, Claudette hooked them up with vocalist/dancer Yana who has become the group’s third member, enhancing their sophisticated and dynamic mix of jazz, blues, pop and R&B with her sultry voice and sinuous moves. Her first recorded appearance with the group will come on their second album No Hotel, to be released later this year.

Meanwhile, you can give them a listen at the Music Box Supper Club, one of its Lucky 7 shows, which gives music fans a shot at catching intriguing acts new to the area for only $7, which includes a craft cocktail of the night.
