Ballers & Makers

It’s time to go large or go home. Everyone is stepping up their game, so let’s hit the road and get busy.

Ballers take center court as the world starts to embrace our work ethic and our winning ways. The Maltz once again shows us how sports, at its best, brings cultures and people together. And our maker class is on display all over town: at CPL this weekend with Ingenuity at the Mini Maker Faire, on Waterloo with the new Praxis Fiber Workshop, and in Chagrin Falls with Art by the Falls.

Lakewood is turning up the heat metaphorically and literally with outstanding culinary offerings, all on display at Taste of Lakewood this weekend; get the details on over 60 cool destinations in their Cool Neighborhood on our site and apps. And if you like to eat, check into the Farm To Table benefit with 25 local chefs, or the Kent Art & Wine Festival.

But if you’re ready to work hard, a CoolCleveland internship might be just the thing to make you the baller you could be. –Thomas Mulready

Baseball was the Great American Pastime for over 100 years and through many cultural changes. And as a game embraced by all segments of American culture, it also reflected the changes in the culture and the growing acceptance of various demographic groups

Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American, now at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage through 9/7, shows how baseball evolved with the times.

Looking for the action this week? Lakewood is on fire! In addition to the many classic Lakewood staples like Nature’s Bin, Melt Bar & Grilled, the Beck Center, the Root Cafe and Geiger’s, take the time to stroll the streets and find some of our favorite hidden gems like Falafel Xpress, Beat Cycles, Taco Tonto’s or the always chocolatey Fear’s Confections.

Get all of the Lakewood favorites combined into one by attending the Taste of Lakewood happening Sun 6/7 @ 1:00pm; but before you go, check out the Lakewood Cool Neighborhood for more permanent listings of restaurants, galleries and other cool destinations. The Cleveland Mini Maker Faire, hosted by the organizers of Ingenuity and the Cleveland Public Library, gives visitors a chance to check out creative, innovative projects other Clevelanders are working on and participate in some themselves. Last year’s was the largest event in the library’s history and this year’s promises to give kids and adults alike a huge creativity boost. It’s an all-day event Sat 6/6.

Local art lovers and collectors love to make the scene at Art by the Falls, taking place in Chagrin Falls’ Riverside Park. Over 120 artists from around the country participate in the two-day juried show, sponsored by the Valley Arts Center, which promotes art education and participation. In that spirit, visitors can help work on a community mural between browsing the booths.

SPONSORED: Cleveland Public Library welcomes Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, to its Writers & Readers Series, Sat 6/13 at 2PM. Piper’s book was so compelling, moving, and often hilarious that Netflix adapted it to what is now one of the most talked about television series. Bring a friend to this free event at Main Library. CPL.org.

Psychic Laura Lyn hosts events at the Kent Stage dedicated to the supernatural. Her second annual Magical Mystery Psychic Fair hopes to put people in touch with spirits of all types, maybe including some of those lurking at the Kent Stage which she says is “the most haunted building in Portage County.” It’s an all-day event taking place Sat 6/6.

Neighborhoods that host multiple art galleries are common. What’s not so common is what’s happening on North Collinwood’s Waterloo Road. Artist/entrepreneurs are starting businesses that provide studio space for experienced artists, classes for novices and gallery space to show work in a particular medium.

Opening this weekend is Praxis Fiber Workshop whose looms, dyeing equipment and other gear will offer opportunity for those whose medium is fiber. Its first exhibit opens Fri 6/5. On Sat 6/6 it hosts an all-day open house where visitors can come and try it all out.

Come Tinker, Come Learn

Peter Debelak set up his Soulcraft Woodshop to allow makers, tinkerers and the general public to have access to tools and equipment for manifesting their creative projects. Educator Sean Wheeler teaches English by having his high school students build a chair (!), and he helps Peter teach classes.

Both will be on hand at the 3rd Annual Cleveland Mini Maker Faire on Sat 6/6 from 10AM-4PM, a program of Cleveland Public Library in partnership with Ingenuity, at CPL’s Downtown branch. Emily Applebaum of Ingenuity joins Peter and Sean to show CoolCleveland around Soulcraft Woodshop in the Hildebrandt Building of the Stockyards neighborhood of Cleveland.

The Marilyn Bianchi Kids Playwriting Festival, now in its 37th year, honors one of the founders of the Dobama Theatre, who died in 1977. It’s the oldest festival in the U.S. to perform original plays written by young people, and these aren’t readings but fully staged productions. The three performances will feature 11 plays written by kids in grades 1-12, chosen from over 300 submitted, so it’s quite a coup for those whose plays are chosen. There are two performances on Sat 6/6 and one on Sun 6/7.
