(S)heroic
Liz Maugans is a shero to lots of people. The founder of Zygote Press is celebrating 20 years with spaghetti and a print making party. And we were honored when she asked CoolCleveland’s Marty Bielat and me to MC the event. Read our interview with Diane Schaffstein, Co-President of NOADA about their upcoming ArtExpo at the Transformer Station. Becky Boyd captains her Groove Train at the Music Box. And Mansfield honors Rep. Marcia Fudge for speaking out on the floor of the House, post-Baltimore. How sheroic.
Some guys are making it happen this week, too: Matt Fish wins the SBA award for Ohio (see our interview), Chef Jonathon Sawyer wins the coveted James Beard award, and Kent’s Hal Walker employs an unusual array of instruments at Peninsula’s G.A.R. Hall.
This weekend, The Hooley kicks off Cleveland’s festival season, and CoolCleveland will be there looking for you to be in our video. Station Hope is the year’s coolest “block party with a purpose;” the Pittie Parade in Lakewood showcases good doggies; MOCA challenges our minds, eyes and bodies; and Cleveland Colectivo celebrates 10 years with Bolectivo and one huge $10K prize.
Be your own (s)hero. A summer internship with CoolCleveland is waiting for you. –Thomas Mulready

Bal Ingénieux Won’t Disappoint!
The Bal Ingénieux, happening on Sat 5/16 @ 6:00pm at Kalman & Pabst Photo Group, is something you don’t want to miss. A benefit for Cleveland’s IngenuityFest, Bal Ingénieux’s masquerade and innovative feel mirrors Cleveland’s Kokoon Arts Club days, with its beautiful costumes, performances, delicious food, and all around good time.
CoolCleveland Correspondent Marty Bielat met up with Ingenuity’s new Programming Director Emily Appelbaum to get the details. Along with getting a breakdown of the space and activities from Emily, CoolCleveland also enjoyed a dazzling exclusive performance from Alberto Ramos Cordero and Micaela Colleen Barret of the Cleveland Tango School.
Yeah, yeah, times have changed but the art of printmaking – making prints by hand – has stood the test of time. After all, there are some things machines can never replace… at least not with heart.
So raise a glass this Fri 5/8, and fill your belly with pasta at the Bada Bingo Spaghetti Dinner + Benefit to toast Zygote Press’ longevity (20 years!) and raise funds for their continued success. CoolCleveland’s Marty Bielat & Thomas Mulready serve as MCs. As with everything they do, this event will ooze with creativity. Rest assured this isn’t your average night of bingo and spaghetti…
Offering $100,000 in scholarships, the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage invites 6th-12th graders from the region to write an essay expressing their thoughts on intolerance and indifference. The awards ceremony at CMA was something else, featuring full-size cut-outs of each of the finalists.
Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman MCed, Humble G Tha Fiddla & Euclid High School Drum Corps performed, as did the Cleveland Heights High School & Newton D. Baker School of Arts Youth Sing Out programs, and overseeing the festivities was Maltz Museum founder and Chair, Milton Maltz.
“Our member galleries and dealers will be exhibiting a cross section of historic, regional, international and contemporary paintings, along with drawings, fine prints, photography, fiber art and sculpture,” Diane Schaffstein, Co-President of NOADA tells CoolCleveland.
