If you’re into avant-garde classical music or if you just like hearing something that you haven’t heard before, rejoice. The Cleveland Chamber Symphony (CCS), a group dedicated to new classical music, is presenting its second annual NEOSonicFest, a series of five performances spread over eight days at various venues. It showcases recent work from both northeast Ohio composers and others, performed by some of the wealth of area talent.

It kicks off Fri 3/20 with reVoice, featuring vocalists Megan Elk and Susan Fletcher, both known on the rock music scene (Elk doubles as cabaret act Miss Alexandra Huntington; Fletcher fronts blues rockers Scarlet & the Harlots) but also trained classical vocalists, along with soprano Rachel Morrison and pianist Lorenzo Salvagni. They’ll perform works by Morton Feldman, John Cage, Stephen Greibling, Ricky Ian Gordon, Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, Keegan Meuris, and Philip Glass at Survival Kit Gallery at the 78th Street Studios.

On Sat 3/21 the Cleveland Chamber Symphony will join with Verb Ballets to present a world premiere composed by Clint Needham and choreographed by Sara Whale. CCS will also perform a world premiere piece by Jeremy Allen. That’s a Baldwin Wallace’s Gamble Auditorium.

Ars Futura Ensemble, a Cleveland-based quintet directed by pianist Shuai Wang, dedicated to commissioning and performing new music, will perform at the Bop Stop on Mon 3/23.

The Cleveland Chamber Symphony will perform again on Tue 3/24, this time with the Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra. They’ll play the finalists works from their Young and Emerging Composers competition at Cleveland State’s Waetjen Auditorium.

Finally, on Sat 3/28, Cleveland musical collective the FiveOne Experimental Orchestra closes the event with a performance at Zygote Press. The ensemble of nine composers and performers mixes genres, utilizes electronic and digital sounds as well as acoustic instruments and collaborates with artists in other media for multimedia performances. The only thing sure about their evening is that it will be unpredictable.

All performances are free, although a $10 donation (or more) would be most appreciated!
