Impermanence 03.04.15 – 03.11.15

Impermanence

Nothing lasts forever. Films are on everyone’s minds this time of year, what with the inaugural Trail Running Film Festival racing through the Capitol Theatre. Heights Arts hosts Impermanence, a fascinating look at the “then” and “now” of Cleveland. Meanwhile, one of our own resident drummers, Alex Sukhoy reacts personally to the AA-winning Whiplash, and for good reason. Put that in your Career Toolbox.

One thing you can count on is healthy and organic food options from Nature’s Bin, and if you haven’t been to their new $5 Fridays, you’re missing the healthiest wine pairings of all time. Lake Erie Ink’s got Comic Con, it’s the Year of the Goat at CPL, and Valerie Mayen bids adieu to her retail store, while her amazing designs live on in the online realm.

And finally, it appears that Mayor Frank “Stonewall” Jackson may also be contemplating his own impermanence, after what may have been his worst week in office. Rest assured, Mansfield Frazier has been on it, and will remain on it, right to the end. –Thomas Mulready

What would the classroom be without its teachers? The Cleveland Metropolitan School District honored its teachers last week by rolling out the red carpet for Teacher Appreciation Day at their East Development Center, literally! In addition to walking the legendary red felt, teachers also received certificates that honored the hard work they put in everyday.

For them, working hard to educate students seems to be what they were built for. It’s no wonder that there has been so much progress for CMSD. With determination like that, how could kids walk out of school unsatisfied? Watch the videos, and see for yourself!

As he prepares to leave‘ his post as the Attorney General of the United States, Eric Holder sat for an exit interview with Politico, the powerhouse Washington political blog site. Interestingly enough, New York Police Commissioner William Bratton gave an interview to Esquire that came out during the same week…

More coverage from Mansfield Frazier:

* Something Is Rotten In City Hall: Had we the gift of clairvoyance we might be able to see Waterloo looming for Mayor Frank Jackson … a circumstance that should not bring joy to even his worse enemies, for as the mayor fares so too does the city. But, alas, Jackson might be on a collision course with history, one dictated as much by karma as anything else… In a mind-boggling response to the wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of Tamir Rice, the city, in a boilerplate response, claimed that the 12-year-old was negligently responsible for his own death…

* You Can Lead a Herd of Horses to Water…: As Bernard L. Buckner, a 40-year police veteran and the chair of the Partnership for a Safer Cleveland stated in a recent editorial, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) mentioned “training” 82 times in its findings related to the investigation of the Cleveland Division of Police…

* Residents Demand Police Ministation: Over 1,500 residents of Ward 11, where Tamir Rice was gunned down in a park at the Cudell Recreation Center, signed a petition demanding that Mayor Frank Jackson reopen the shuttered police ministation on that sits empty and unused on the same site near the Center…

* Mixed Messages from City Hall: On the day that Mayor Frank Jackson invited the media into the Red Room for a press conference (where he did an excellent job of setting forth his administration’s accomplishments in terms of the reforms his administration has foisted on the Cleveland Division of Police by the way) his Law Department was blowing him out of the water by stating that Tamir Rice was the cause of his own death…

* Mob Rule: The frustration level was palpable inside the New Sardis Primitive Baptist Church on Wednesday (Feb. 25) as members of the community met with representatives of four police union organizations…

* Bending Towards Justice: Sometimes you just have to suck it up and move on… on to the next protest that is…

MANSFIELD: A Call for Continued Vigilance
Good luck motivating black people Mansfield. It’s not just black people who are not involved. it’s the entire nation asleep at the wheel. We shouldn’t be living in a oligarchical plutocracy but we are because no one is paying close enough attention and even if they are they aren’t motivated to get off their butts and act. Forgive my pessimism but it gets reinforced all to often….

PHOTOSTREAM: Al Stewart Charms The Kent Stage
Al Stewart is always charming and spell-binding in concert, and Dave Nachmanoff adds incredible texture to the live performances of his songs. It is almost (almost — but not quite, of course) like seeing a full band perform them…
