Northeast Ohio has so many topnotch college and university jazz studies programs that the area is crawling with professor/musicians whose skills are world-class. But the pool of such talent extends outside the area. Columbus has its own group of stellar players for whom teaching (Capital University, The Ohio State University), performing and composing offer a rounded musical life.
Four such musicians form the ensemble Magically Delicious, and with a name like that they’d better be good! Sax/clarinet/flute players Michael Cox and Kris Keith front the band, backed by the rhythm section of bassist Andy Woodson and drummer Tony McClung, which plays original music by the band members, blending jazz, funk, Brazilian music and other styles.
