The city of Cleveland’s decision to go after small clubs for back admissions taxes — among the highest in the country — had the potential to destroy the local music scene. Luckily, a level-headed city council voted to lower the rate and the city worked out a deal with clubs like the Beachland Ballroom that let them stay in business. But the Beachland incurred what for them is an enormous legal bill, so some of their lawyer friends are hosting “Raising the Bar,” an evening of lawyer/musicians playing to raise money to help pay off the debts. Watch as CMSD graduate, Jayrone Elliot, inspires students at his old high school: Glenville High. Elliott, who now plays as a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers, spoke to students and told them to stay in school, go to class, stay out of trouble, make a plan and work that plan.

The speech really hit home for the students because, like some in the audience, Elliot struggled throughout high school. “I didn’t realize how important school was then,” said Elliot, who stayed after the speech to take photos, shake hands, and interact with the students.

Peter Lawson Jones
Creating Your Third Act

Peter Lawson Jones is a man with strong presence. With his family or in front of a classroom, over a meal or at a cultural event, his magnetic personality and deep curiosity draw people in, quickly.

On the heels of a career-altering audition to New York City, Peter took the time to break his big news with me and to discuss his professional path. And how in our youth-obsessed world, how we design and live our third acts can lead to deep happiness and inner satisfaction…
More from Alex Sukhoy here

A shibboleth commonly voiced by members of certain faith communities is to “hate the sin, but love the sinner.” Similarly, we can hate police brutality but still love the police…

More coverage from Mansfield Frazier:

* Street Justice (Or, Heavy Breathing): One truism of policing in America (although seldom given voice to but universally understood between those engaged in the game of “cops and robbers” that’s all too often played out in inner-city neighborhoods) is that if you make a cop chase you, when and if he catches you, he’s going to dispense some street justice…

* A Call to Service: While many young blacks — along with many others representing a wide variety of ethnicities — across the country have been very active and vocal in demonstrating against police brutality, they still need to do even more…

* Citizens Handcuffing Cops: The 4th century Arabic proverb, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” is echoing around Cleveland as police union boss Steve Loomis is publicly stating that if he and Frank Jackson “fought them on this [meaning the Department of Justice (DOJ), which is in the process of negotiating a consent decree with the city] we could kick their ass. We would help him…”

* A Meeting of the Minds?: Over 200 people packed into the Jerry Sue Thornton Center on the main campus of Cuyahoga Community College for the first public meeting between the City of Cleveland, represented by Mayor Frank Jackson, and the Department of Justice (DOJ), represented by U.S. Attorney Steven Dettlelbach….

SHOCKWAVES Will Mesmerize You @ Transformer Station
The Bidwells and Transformer Station represent a long-needed breakthrough in the imaginations of art lovers — the meaningful recognition of the immense talent in Cleveland’s contemporary art scene. And no one more exemplifies that talent, talent that can hold its own anywhere in the world, than Kasumi, who has transformed sound, moving pictures, and the gestural essence of communication into works of a sort there’s not yet even a name for. “Cinematic Assemblage” might be the right term, but until you’ve seen it you can’t imagine what it is…
