Local tenor sax player Ernie Krivda is a jazz omnivore. He’s played with combos of all sizes, shapes and forms. Since starting to play professionally in the mid ’60s, he’s put out nearly two dozen albums and become internationally known to jazz aficionados.
In 1995, he started a project locally that has proved very popular: the Fat Tuesday Big Band. The 18 musicians recreate the big band swing era when jazz was popular music and dance music as well as a showcase for incredible musicianship. The Fat Tuesday Band is all of that.
The group is throwing a bash at Blu Jazz to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary, the group’s first appearance at the new Akron jazz venue. And it’s taking place on another anniversary: Krivda’s 70th birthday. Based on his energy, his enthusiasm and his generous embrace of new and vintage musical styles and performers, you’d never guess he was that old.
