Stooges Brass Band Brightens @MusicBoxCle With a Taste of New Orleans

Stooges

Sun 1/11 @ 8PM

It’s hard to believe that nine years ago, after Katrina drowned New Orleans, many people were wondering if the town’s distinctive musical culture would die with its people scattered.

The bands did not stay away. The Stooges Brass Band is one of many survivors, coming together in 1996 to blend the traditional brass sounds with contemporary jazz, funk and hip hop for a lively mix that’s sure to get even the grumpiest curmudgeon on his feet and dancing.

The group’s a regular at major New Orleans events like the Jazz & Heritage Festival and the Essence Music Festival, and has played other major festival-type events like Bonaroo and South by Southwest, although they’re not as well-known outside the city as the band that inspired their formation, the Rebirth Brass Band.

That’s all the more reason to catch their performance at the Music Box Supper Club, which seems to have developed a pipeline to New Orleans to bring up acts we haven’t seen in these parts.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of show.
