The twice-monthly Lyrical Rhythms poetry and soul open mic nights have been going on, first at the B-Side Liquor Lounge and now upstairs at the Grog Show, for years.
Filling an off night, they allow aspiring performance poets to have their moment onstage. Sure, some just get up and reel off a predictable litany of urban ills. But others display deft sense of wordplay, underscored by hip-hop and R&B rhythms that show they have music in their souls as well. As with most open mic situations, you never know what you’ll hear — and you could be pleasantly surprised.
