There have been many impacts, good and bad, of our shrinking globe. One of the positive ones is how easy it is to enjoy the cultural and artistic outputs of faraway countries that were once completely beyond our access. That’s led to the growth of what’s been dubbed “world music.”
And it’s brought us many fascinating forms of music, such as Tuvan throat singing, which comes from the Republic of Tuva, in Siberia near the Mongolia border. It’s a form of vocalizing in which the singer essentially harmonizes with himself, creating several pitches at once. Put four of them together, as in Huun-Huur-Tu, once of the best known of such groups in the west, and you have a choir onstage.
The group augments its vocals with traditional and more recently, western instruments including synthesizers, and has collaborated with musicians from Russia, Ireland, Bulgaria and Japan, as well as jazz, blues and classical musicians from the U.S.
Huun-Huur-Tu will perform at the Music Box Supper Club. Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 day of show.
