Sun 12/7 @ 7PM
The Contemporary Youth Orchestra, which features talented young players from across the region, is probably best known for its performances with various classic rock musicians like Pat Benatar, Graham Nash, Styx and Jefferson Starship. But it launches its 20th season with its traditional December new music program, which spotlights contemporary composers and world premieres with the composers on hand to work with the orchestra.
The program will pay special tribute to 80-year-old British composer Bernard Rands with his 1988 London Serenade, his 2011 Danza Petrificada and his brand-new Opening, a world premiere. It will also include a second world premiere, Stefan Podell’s Concerto for Two Violas and Orchestra, with Lynne Ramsey of the Cleveland Orchestra and her husband Cleveland Institute of Music professor Jeffrey Irvine on violas. It’s rounded out with Richard Hill and Chris Barber’s Concerto for Jazz Trombone and Orchestra, featuring Rachel Waterbury on trombone.
It takes place at Cleveland State University’s Waetjen Auditorium.
Tickets are $15-$22.
