Shadow

Shadow

We prefer the shadows, but these days we’re in the business of throwing the spotlight on all the cool stuff. Which means we haunt the corners, the edges, the boundaries, and zero in on the people, places and events that should be out in plain view but too often aren’t.

Like taking TechPint and turning it into the Industry Digital Summit, which is exactly what Paul McAvinchey is doing this week. Or filmmaker Robert Banks, doing a Kickstarter to fund his latest (and last?) film, Paper Shadows, about artists making work in the Midwest. Watch Marty’s video interview. Or River Colors Studio’s new yarn club, featuring yarn based on the colors of Cleveland. That’s the way to think about our cool neighborhoods.

Pancakes for kids is the new way that United Way is kicking off their audacious campaign. Regional favorites from the Afghan Whigs to the Black Keys to Blackgrass Baptism are playing around this week. The Garlic Festival hits Shaker Square and Polar Express tix go on sale, so get ’em while you can. Mix at CMA goes cross-cultural, Great Lakes Brewing throws a block party, and Lakewood throws its second Wine & Craft Beer Festival. Got a mobile? Get ours. Then get back in the shadows. –Thomas Mulready

Industry Digital Summit
A Synergy of Start-ups

When Paul McAvinchey arrived in Cleveland a few years ago to work in product development at a local start-up, the Ireland native wanted nothing more than to fit into the Northeast Ohio tech community.

This led to the creation of TechPint, which in a nutshell is nothing more than a way for creative folks to get together to talk about the industry while having a pint or two.

Now McAvinchey is upping the ante with the inaugural Industry Digital Summit…

CLE Filmmaker Robert Banks Needs Your Help
With New Project Paper Shadows

He’s going all out for his last production! Cleveland based filmmaker Robert Banks is pulling out all of the stops with his “supposedly” last, and most recent project: Paper Shadows. The feature length film will be about the struggles artists face living in Midwestern towns, like Cleveland.

CoolCleveland Correspondent Marty Bielat met up with Banks and discussed the film. Banks described how, along with shooting the film, he is actively teaching interns throughout the production process. The project still needs plenty of funding, which led Banks to create a Kickstarter Campaign so supporters can donate by Mon 9/15.

Yarn is taking over. Lakewood’s own River Colors Studio introduces a Yarn Club featuring yarn based on the colors of Cleveland.

The inspiration is, according to River Colors’ Rachel Metz, “definitely a combination of the events, businesses, people and culture,” of the neighborhoods of Cleveland. “Each neighborhood has a personality and I’m trying to translate that into color…”

CMSD’s FDR School Hosts
The United Way Campaign Kickoff

The United Way of Greater Cleveland kicked off its annual campaign last Thursday at CMSD’s Franklin D. Roosevelt School, calling attention to a symbol of the organization’s new investment priorities. United Way has traditionally launched its annual campaign by serving pancakes on Public Square, but instead a phalanx of flippers made flapjacks for students.

FDR is home to a full-fledged Boys and Girls Club. And the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Cleveland serves as the “lead agency” at the school, helping to organize community “wraparound” services for students and families in an initiative underwritten by the District, United Way and donors.

Are you one of those adventurous people who will try anything? Get to the 6th annual Cleveland Garlic Festival at Shaker Square early because Mitchell’s garlic ice cream, made especially for the festival, sells out. You’ll find more kinds of garlic than you knew existed, plus food, music, kids’ activities, chef demos & more. Sat 9/6-Sun 9/7.

DURSTIN: Hypocritical NFL’s Drug Policy is a Joke
The only nonsense here is yours, Larry. He knew the rules, and he broke the rules. Your lefty carping that this is somehow about race is, well, just plain silly. Playing in the NFL is not a right, but a privilege. He lost his privileges for the year. And he has no one to blame but himself….
John Ettorre

MANSFIELD: Senseless Violence? #Ferguson
Are we going to go through this again? A young black man is killed by the police, and we have months of racial animosity and rioting caused by the tragedy. This happens multiple times every summer, but we never see at any solutions that will prevent future deaths…
John Oney

I hate to say this, I don’t disagree. Being a strong advocate for racial equality, I figured when I was in college that by the time I’d hit my 40s (now), I’d see more equitable treatment of all races. It hasn’t happened…
Doug Wood

SOME SURE took advantage and got a TV or whatever… OTHERS LITERALLY ALMOST died for Cause…
