Experts

We’ve had enough. For years, the experts have told us that our economy is in crumbling and our region is in decline. Big media repeated it, and pretty soon lots of people believed it. But experts don’t have imagination. They don’t have creativity. They can’t tell you about the future, only the past.

So a whole new brand of artist-entrepreneur has sprung up in the vacuum, and they have a very different opinion of our potential. You may be one of them. James Levin and I were exactly this pair of artist-entrepreneur un-experts when we started Ingenuity 10 years ago. We’ll be smiling as we attend their 10th anniversary this weekend and look forward to the next ten explosive, glorious years.

Or maybe you dig experts such as biologists, naturalists, specialists, horticulturists, environmental scientists and permaculturists, like the kind you’ll find at BioBlitz at the George Jones Farm in Oberlin, or at GBG’s RIPE! Fest. Or our interview with Gigi Sohn of the FCC, an expert on net neutrality. Or maybe you’ll find your bliss at a mega-mixer. Sick of experts? Join up at NorTech’s UnConference with no agenda, no sessions, no topics. Just people who want to connect around innovation.

Go on a Viking adventure with the kids, do Family Open Studio Day at Art House, or be at Event in the Tent to support Cornucopia/Nature’s Bin. Or be at Akron’s Porch Rockr, TKS’s Rage at the Stage, or an old-time picking’ jam in Cleveland Hts. Maybe you can be your own expert. –Thomas Mulready

BioBlitz!
Scope Out Local Biodiversity

On the surface a get-together of biologists, naturalists, specialists, horticulturists, environmental scientists and permaculturists doesn’t seem like it would be a lot of fun for the general public; however, the special event called BioBlitz is promising all that and more.

Hosted by the New Agrarian Center and Green Triangle, BioBlitz finds all of the aforementioned scientists & more converging Sun 9/21 @ George Jones Farm in Oberlin….

Net neutrality is in the headlines, with millions of comments being sent to the FCC over the past few weeks.

So it was excellent timing when OneCommunity awarded Gigi Sohn, the Special Counsel for External Affairs to the Chairman of the FCC their Broadband Hero Award for her lifetime commitment to universal access to the internet, airwaves and all communication channels.

Cool Cleveland caught up with Ms. Sohn at OneCommunity’s annual meeting. If you’d like to have your voice be heard on net neutrality, use this easy form on the FCC’s site here.

In some states, a trip to a winery can be as dry as last year’s vintage.

But in Ashtabula County’s Wine Country, the music, food and fun flow as fast as the top-notch wines and local craft brews.

Mark Winchell of the Ashtabula CVB talks with Cool Cleveland about the quality of Ohio’s wines, the burgeoning culinary scene, and the musical entertainment happening throughout the season and throughout the region.

Ohio’s Diversity Explained in Less than 5 Minutes
By The Center for Community Solutions

Ohio is often a political battleground and a bellwether for the nation. But why? Ohio is a vastly diverse state. More than 11 million people call it home. But what if Ohio was made up of only 100 residents representing the state’s current diversity? What would they look like? Where would they live and work? How much would they make? What would they believe?

“Ohio 100,” presented by Community Solutions, explores the demographic, economic, and geographic characteristics of 100 representative Ohioans to better understand the state’s diversity and complexity, and its role as an indicator of trends around the country.

Most locals will agree that it has been a fabulous summer for everything Cleveland.

However, few could have sensed — until last week — that maybe one of the greatest blessings the city has received has to do with the absence of two former residents…

In the previous CareerTOOLBOX: Music Edition, I shared the story of how Kiss Me Deadly, the local band to get signed by Cleveland’s Kingswood Records, came together, including how the decades of music training, playing and influence drove the three members to form the trio.

In part two of our interview we go deep and discuss what changed as well as what happens now. Because as anyone who’s reached success knows, you never quite reach a destination, exhale and let it all come to you…

Trying to Turn Back the Clock in Richmond Heights

Who Says You Need a Car?
QUITE frankly considering WHAT OUR OWN local politicos and certain intersts were doing NO wonder folks fled OVER county line…
bob

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the way things are going in the city-center of Cleveland. What with a major grocery story going up and building upon building converted into apartments or condos, this area is turning into a true car-less enclave. One of the repeated compliments I always heard from the thousands of participants of the highly successful Gay Games is how walkable everything is and how accessible mass transit is….
Evan

I recently challenged myself to live car-free in Cleveland for one year. That year passed in August and I have no intentions of returning to car ownership in the near future (or ever) – or leaving Cleveland to continue life without a car. I expected days to be difficult and trying, but was pleasantly surprised at my seamless transition….
