Party Time

Five years ago, Cleveland beat out Boston, Miami and Washington D.C. for the honor of hosting this week’s 2014 Gay Games 9, joining world class host cities like Sydney, Amsterdam, San Francisco, Chicago and Cologne. In four years, the Games move to Paris. For those who were here at the time, try to think back to just how different our region was only 5 years ago. And now, we are so ready to party.

As always, Cool Cleveland can help. We’ve got stories on the Gay Games festivities, Festival Village activities, the official GG Black and Gold Parties, the Big Cleveland Sing at Old Stone Church, the AHA! Cleveland 3-day festival of lights, Trinity Cathedral’s GG Interfaith Service, PechaKucha 23, and a Bloody Mary Brunch at the new Music Box Supper Club.

But as usual, there’s so much going on beyond the obvious here, that you won’t be idle for a minute, even if you can’t make any of GG9. Read below about the Cleveland Flea’s return to Tyler Village, Hammer Damage’s return to Akron, Cedar Fairmount’s summer fest & art show, Beer at the Pier at Edgewater, Akron’s National Hamburger Festival, Sammy DeLeon at Nighttown, the Dragon Boat Happy Hour Mixer, the First Annual Latino Multicultural Business & Professional Networking Event (do they need a snappier title?), and so much more. There’s no excuse for sleeping this week in the CLE.

Lest we forget that life in these parts is not just one big party, Larry Durstin reminds us of the Summer of Hate and Mansfield warns us about pimping the poor. And in the face of the “pause” in awarding Creative Workforce individual artist fellowships, Josh Usmani interviews an astounding 21 artists to answer “How does awarding ‘Artistic Excellence’ equate to funding ‘Community Vibrancy’?”

Whether you’re a visitor or a CLE native, your phone and our mobile can be your best friends this week, with dozens of Cool Neighborhoods and over 1000 listings of cool restaurants, hip hangouts, microbreweries, record stores, pop-ups, food trucks and coffee & teas shops. Did we mention it’s all free? Time to start the party. –Thomas Mulready

13 Scholarships Awarded
at CMSD’s Army of Believers Luncheon

How inspiring! It was great to see all of the smiling faces at CMSD’s annual Army of Believers Luncheon last Fri 8/1, and boy did they have a reason for smiling. This year, 13 students from local CMSD high schools were awarded scholarships.

Totaling well over $50,000 dollars, the scholarships were earned by students who showed excellence in their academic records or overall contributions to the community, via recommendations, and through an essay and interview analysis. The Students will be attending such colleges as: Ohio State University-Mansfield, John Carroll University, Ohio State, Columbia University, Kenyon College, Cleveland State University and many more.

Last week, we published an article summarizing and commenting on the recent discussion regarding the future of the Creative Workforce Fellowship program at The City Club. Applications for this year’s round of Fellowships were “paused” indefinitely as Cuyahoga Arts and Culture reviews the results of the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture’s (CPAC) independent review.

At the meeting, a key question was raised: “How does awarding ‘Artistic Excellence’ equate to funding ‘Community Vibrancy’?”

In an effort to explore this question, we have solicited the thoughts and firsthand experience of an eclectic variety of the region’s most prominent and active members of the arts community…

It was mid-June and I had just come back to Cleveland after my first year of teaching in another part of the state when Marty, one of my closest friends, called to tell me he was getting married at the end of the summer on Labor Day weekend.

But it was 1968 and absolutely nothing would be going according to plan…

One sure way to tell the electioneering season is hard upon us is that old trite, cheap political stunts are once again dusted off, trotted out, and put into play to curry favor with voters.

While both parties are not above engaging in practices that virtually yell to the electorate that some politicians think they have oatmeal for brains, the stunt in question is exclusively the domain of the liberals and progressives…

MANSFIELD: Great White Father Syndrome
why do all parties concerned feel the need to compartmentalize people. the only requirements should be a desire to help and the ability to impart that knowledge. your’e both wrong! stop trying to put all people in boxes and look at the big picture! stop trying to protect your own turf and look at the big picture. actually helping these people….
