Jack Schantz Quartet Plays Jazz Hymns & Spirituals @Lock3Akron

Wed 9/3 @ 7PM

University of Akron professor/director of jazz studies Jack Schantz is one of the many outstanding jazz musicians making northeast Ohio their home, thanks to the multiple college and university jazz programs in the area.

The trumpet player has performed with traditional jazz ensembles like the Artie Shaw Orchestra, the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. And he was the artistic director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, which keeps traditional orchestra-style jazz alive, from 1992-2009; he still performs with the ensemble.

But he also plays with his own Jack Schantz Quartet, which takes hymns, spirituals, and gospel music and transforms them into jazz pieces.

The group will be playing at the Lockbottom Blues & Jazz Club, the outdoor space behind the Akron Civic Theatre, part of the Lock 3/Lock 4 complex. The show is free. Food and beverages are available for purchase so you can make a night out of it.
