Envy
Local maker Jay Yoo has always kept us Cleveland boys well dressed, and now his Kickstarter is $50K over its goal to launch bolstr, a cross-body mini-backpack for men. We backed it. Don’t be envious. Read our story, view his video, and you may want to as well.
We’re psyched for the opportunity to see The Polyphonic Spree (all 20 of them!) at the new Music Box Supper Club, which opens this week with shows by honey honey, Cracker, Bruce Cockburn, and Mavis Staples. We interviewed TPS’s leader Tim DeLaughter on the phone, and you can listen below.
They’re all jealous because we have such a full slate of coolness all around us this week: Akron Flair Fest with The Indigo Girls and Anne E. DeChant, Opera per Tutti in Tremont’s Lincoln Park, Weapons of Mass Creation Fest at CPT, Little Italy’s Feast of the Assumption, Recharge on the Rooftop with DJ Rob Sherwood, trumpeter Josh Rzepka at the Akron Civic, Taj Mahal at The Kent Stage, and so much more you’ll need our mobile to keep up with it all.
Keep smiling, folks. They’re envious of you. –Thomas Mulready

Do men have purse envy? For generations the masculine sex has been attempting to disguise the fact they carried a handbag or pocketbook in the form of a fanny pack or male purse.
Now Highland Heights resident Jay Yoo, who owns travel apparel and accessory manufacturing company Koyono, is hoping to break barriers with the modern bolstr. The small carry bag — designed in CLE & made in the USA — is already turning heads as the focus of a Kickstarter project that met its $10,000 goal less than 24 hours after kicking off…

When Tim DeLaughter’s bandmate in Tripping Daisy Wes Berggren passed away tragically from a drug overdose, he knew he wanted something totally different. “When Wes passed, it took a toll on everybody. It was earth-shattering.” Listen to the exclusive Cool Cleveland interview with Tim here.
Appearing at the new Music Box Supper Club on Sat 8/23, Polyphonic Spree will bring about 20 musicians, from french horn to strings to a full rock band.
Polyphonic Spree delighted David Bowie enough for him to curate them into the Meltdown Festival and have them open for him on tour. Listen to DeLaughter talk about working with Bowie and putting his music on movies and TV soundtracks like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and United States of Tara. “Hopefully we get some perks when people decide to use our music. That’s basically how we’ve been able to survive. At the end of the day, we get paid for a 4-piece band. But we have four bands in our band!” You’ll have to come to their performance to see if they will be wearing their ubiquitous choral robes. Or something totally different.

There’s turnaround happening at Collinwood High school with the application of their New Tech curriculum. Collinwood High school is among 14 schools in Ohio adapting to the program with three others in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The new curriculum focuses on integrating technology into the education process.
“It’s really exciting because it’s all project-based learning and all grounded in real-world applications, said Principal Maria Carlson. So often, students will say, ‘Why am I even learning this? I’ll never use it.’ That’s not ever going to be true anymore because they’ll be applying it in real time.

Nothing makes a more calamitous sound than a holier-than-thou politician tumbling down from off their lofty perch.
The amount of schadenfreude being expressed around Cuyahoga County (even among loyal Democrats) in regards to the crash and burn of the career of gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald (who, for years, was known derisively among many workers in county government as “FitzJesus”) is astounding… if not necessarily all that surprising…
