Upcycle

We like to reuse stuff around here. You could say we’ve made it into an art form. Our awesome buildings, our talent, our green space, even our economy. We’re experiencing our third or fourth comeback in as many decades. I’ve actually lost count.

Tyler Village is one of the best examples of creative reuse, with tech companies, a brewery and a vinyl pressing plant inhabiting an old industrial wire works. This weekend, Groove N Brew brings 5 bands and the Cleveland Flea. Experience the locally produced premiere of Young Frankenstein at the Beck. Visit Upcycle Parts Shop, the new arts-focused creative reuse center on St. Clair. What’s old is new.

You can help save the historic and important Viktor Schrekengost murals and bas relief from the soon-to-be-demolished Lakewood HS at the Midsummer Night Celebration at CIA. Upcycle away. GardenWalk Cleveland should give you some midsummer inspiration. Join a Brewraiser for a better Cleveland. Run your heart out at the Summer Meltdown. Be there for the re-opening of the Bop Stop, now inhabited by the talented kids at the Cleveland Music School Settlement. Upcycle that. –Thomas Mulready

It may not be instantly obvious as you drive by, but there’s a lot going on in and around the area at 36th and Superior.

The hulking building complex called Tyler Village houses cool and growing young businesses like Indigo Imp Brewery and Gotta Groove Records, one of the country’s few vinyl manufacturing plants. And the new Asia Town Center is right across the street…

CMSD Students Use Their Summers
to Improve Their English

Students spending their summers at Thomas Jefferson International Newcomers Academy are working hard with their ESL teachers to improve their English. While the students’ reading scores may currently be below the national average, these teachers seem to be using innovative techniques to turn that number around.

Who says summers can’t be productive? These students are learning the skills they need, all while having a blast. In addition to their classroom studies, the nearly 50 students have recently went on a neighborhood walk, toured downtown on Lolly the Trolley and traveled to the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Hale Farm and Village.

Save the Schrekengosts! Join a Midsummer Night Celebration to support the efforts to restore two Viktor Schreckengost masterpieces housed @ Lakewood HS. Wed 7/9.

From Reggae to Recovery
How I-Tal’s Dave Smeltz Found His Groove

In 1978, Dave Smeltz founded I-tal, the band that opened up the local rock scene to reggae. After some of its members split off in 1983 to form the even more popular First Light, Smeltz took I-Tal on the road, playing resorts like Charleston and Hilton Head.

But even as he was enjoying a successful music career, he was spiraling into substance abuse. How he came out of it and the project he is currently working on to give back to the recovery community are the topics of his new book Clean: From Reggae to Recovery, A Memoir. He and his publisher Jennifer Coiley will be at Mac’s Backs on Coventry to talk about the book and autograph copies. Sat 7/12

Even if you’re a part of Cleveland’s dance community, it can be hard to keep up with the dance that’s happening in Cleveland’s African-American community.

So we were completely unprepared for the dancing we saw when we sat in on a recent rehearsal for Dance on the Edge, Terence Greene’s latest brain child. In addition to some of his current or former students at Cleveland School of the Arts, Greene had brought in some outstanding additional dancers…

DURSTIN: An Independence Day Message for Millenials
Another brilliant column by Brother Larry. Let me lift a piece: I know that some of you Millenials feel angry because the economy isn’t brimming with jobs for you and you are growing up in a time when relationships are difficult and your elders have left you disillusioned and you don’t know what you want to do with your lives…
David Eden

once again Mr. Durstin puts his own spin on issues of the day that actually to the discorse…

MANSFIELD: Some Hard Truths
It would seem that Mr. Frazier here simply wishes to make more excuses about ‘systemic transgressions against people of colour’ and hint, hint, nudge, nudge, how evil white people are…
