Following the biggest annual Waterloo Arts Fest so far, the folks in Collinwood took July off from their monthly Walk All Over Waterloo. However, they’re not wasting any time in August. This month’s Walk All Over Waterloo features a full evening of events for the entire family. On Saturday, the 2014 Euclid Beach Blast will offer a full day of food, live music, fun and sun.
If you haven’t heard, Liz Maugans, Bellamy Printz and the folks at Zygote Press recently opened their Ink House – a satellite location designed to serve this community’s unique needs. At 6pm, the Zygote Print Garage will teach community members how to screen print your own record jacket. Meanwhile, their mobile printing press will travel throughout the neighborhood.
Waterloo’s resident toy store, Star Pop Vintage + Modern, is hosting an Ice Cream Social with musical guests Meredith Pangrace and Maura Rogers & the Bellows. Live music, free ice cream and an eclectic shop filled with vintage and modern toys (and more)? Kids of all ages are sure to be in heaven.
“It’s an exciting time on Waterloo,” says Troy Schwartz, owner of Star Pop. “It seems like more and more people are discovering all that the street has to offer, from amazing live music, to some of the best record store and vintage shops in town, and great art galleries and arts related organizations. There’s always great music being performed on Waterloo. During this Friday’s Walk All Over Waterloo, STAR POP vintage + modern is adding a little bit more music to the mix, with a free set from Cleveland based alt folk band Maura Rogers and the Bellows. They’re friends and neighbors so we’re excited to have them playing in front of the store. We’re also working with our East 185th neighbors Chill Pop Shop to provide some tasty treats for the event.”
Next, stop by the Waterloo Sculpture Garden for their 2nd Annual Camping in the Wood. Bring a tent to spend the night in the garden, or just stop by for a free night of food, live music, a fire tossing performance by Faith Mcfluff and more. At sunset, you’re invited to Family Movie Night for a special outdoor screening of Rio 2 (popcorn provided – bring a blanket). With the Euclid Beach Blast on Saturday, it’s a perfect night to sleep under the stars, and spend your weekend in Collinwood.
Next to the Waterloo Sculpture Garden, Gallery One Sixty will hold an opening reception for Kat Francis and Steve Ehret’s So Much Beauty in Dirt. They have been working for months in preparation for this exhibition of collaborations. A few weeks ago, they exhibited and painted at the Rootwire music festival. This will be Ehret’s first exhibition in Cleveland since the infamous Undercurrents show at Loren Naji Studio Gallery.
” I’m super excited to have two of my favorite artists showing at Gallery One Sixty for August and September,” says Gallery One Sixty’s owner Bryon Miller. “Gallery One Sixty will be celebrating its 1 year anniversary this September, and I couldn’t think of a better way to ring it in.”
You’ll also have an additional chance to stop by The Maria Neil Art Project for one last chance to check out Convergence/Divergence – a collaborative show of work by husband/wife duo Laila Voss and Bruce Edwards. In September, owners John Farina and Adam Tully will celebrate the gallery’s First Year Anniversary with an exhibition of work by Cathie Bleck and Amy Casey.
On Saturday, the Euclid Beach Blast returns with games, art, live music, food, information tables, guided bike tours and more. A sandcastle-building competition will be amplified by a special creation by award-winning ice and sand sculptor Greg Batauski.
“As Clevelanders, we often spend a great deal of time dwelling on what was great about our past,” says the Beach Blast’s main organizer, Stephen Love. “Euclid Beach Amusement Park is no exception. But what if instead, we used the memories of the past to aspire to an even greater future? Euclid Beach Blast celebrates and builds off of all that was great about the once famed amusement park and explores event opportunities and amenities that will make our lakefront park a neighborhood and regional asset once again!”
Upstage Players, a local youth theater company will perform “No Easy Cleanup” – an original piece about the importance of protecting the Great Lakes and our beaches. It was created during a six-week theater writing and environmental science summer internship.
Foodies can sample the neighborhoods many options including B&M BBQ, Beachland Ballroom, Callaloo Café, Chill Pop Shop, Real Frut, East Coast Custard, Fired Up Taco Truck and Savannah Kettle Corn. If you ride your bike, look for the Ohio City Bike Co-Op Bike Corral. End your day with Sunset Yoga in front of Lake Erie.
Coming this October, Waterloo’s long-awaited streetscape is scheduled to be completed as a number of new businesses open their doors. Stay tuned.
