It’s always great to see young women breaking down the doors to the heavily male bastion of jazz.
Trumpeter/vocalist/composer Bria Skonberg packed up her horn and moved from the small, out-of-the-way city of Chilliwack in British Columbia to New York to expand her opportunities.
Not that she hasn’t had a lot already. She’s been performing since she was in her teens, and has already toured Europe, Japan and China. But she’s got a new CD out this past spring called Into Your Own, and she was named “Up and Coming Jazz Artist” of 2013 by the Jazz Journalists Association. Interestingly, despite coming from thousands of miles away, her musical style incorporates New Orleans jazz influences, along with classic jazz, soul, and world music.
When she makes her Cleveland debut at Nighttown, French boogie woogie pianist Philippe LeJeune will play an opening set.
Tickets are $20.
