Neighbors in Action (NIA), a group made up of residents from the Edgewater/Cudell neighborhood and surrounding areas, has been vocally opposed to demolishing the Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, aka that long vacant domed structure located at Lake Ave. and W. 117th St. The citizen activist group pushed for the structure to be preserved or turned into a park or, even, a rock climbing wall.
Now there are new plans for the church — and, yes, demolition is involved. And, while NIA does not condone the demolition of the Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, they are unopposed to Brickhaus Partners’ proposal of building eleven townhomes and a small public park.
“Like a game of cards, one needs to know when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em. Let’s hope the City’s gamble on Brickman proves fruitful for the Edgewater neighborhood,” says NIA spokesperson Jeon Francis in an exclusive chat with Cool Cleveland.
“Sadly the plan selected by the City doesn’t call for an adaptive reuse of Fifth Church, but the concept proposed by Brickman is light years better than what we as a community were speaking out against last spring—a plan to wipe away Fifth Church for a truck bay and a 30,000 square foot retail box!
“Hindsight is 20/20 and time will tell in a decade or two if the City made the right choice for the neighborhood.”
Here’s to hoping.
