Bluegrass Stalwart Peter Rowan Comes To @KentStage

Thu 5/29 @ 8PM

Guitarist/mandolinist/singer/songwriter Peter Rowan has had a wide-ranging career to say the least.

He’s most commonly associated with bluegrass, since he got his professional start in the early ’60s, playing in bluegrass godfather Bill Monroe’s band, and played in the bluegrass band Old and In the Way in the early ’70s, an ensemble that attracted quite a bit of instant attention due to Jerry Garcia’s participation.

But his career has had a lot of interesting byways. He played blues and folk as a teenager in the very early ’60s. Later, in the late ’60s and early ’70s, he played with Earth Opera and Seatrain, a couple of the adventurously eclectic rock bands that were all the rage in the “freeform” era.

Since then, he’s been part of a seemingly endless series of collaborations, including with most of the major players in the so-called “newgrass” scene. He’s seldom not touring or recording with someone, often with his own Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band. His latest solo album, The Old School, came out last year.

He’ll be performing at the Kent Stage, a little warmup for the Kent Folk Festival, which kicks off 6/5.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 at the door.
