A Great Day
I don’t know. I see scudding sheets over Cleveland, and I think, “It’s a great day for photos: those clouds act like a giant soft box.” Does that make me an automatic optimist? But what if it really is a good day? What if Ellen Rudolph takes over the Maltz Museum and brings all her contemporary art mojo? Or if Scott Pickering and 30 other awesome artists take over abandoned and foreclosed houses in Slavic Village?
What if they put the word out for a few dozen jazz musicians and aficionados and 150 showed up for the photo? What if they held an art opening, and didn’t serve wine? Would even more art mavens show up, and buy more art? What if the world’s best orchestra brought their fiddles and horns to the bowling alleys, coffee shops and porches of Lakewood? And if all these things were happening in one seven day period? I’d say that was a great week. –Thomas Mulready

Cool Cleveland talks with Ellen Rudolph, the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritages recently installed executive director.
They discuss her background as a contemporary art curator at the Akron Art Museum and Progressive, as well as “Begin The Conversation,” a stunning series of plays, speakers, films, concerts, and even a bike ride, that position the Maltz as a “true cultural hub.”
Jazzheads know about the iconic photograph “A Great Day in Harlem.” Shot in 1958, the picture includes nearly 60 legendary jazz musicians posing in front of a Harlem brownstone.
In an attempt to not only capture a moment in time but also promote the upcoming Tri-C JazzFest, a similar photo shoot took place roughly a month ago capturing 143 local jazz musicians, writers, supporters & enthusiasts.

Dolores owns a land trust home in Detroit-Shoreway and she couldn’t be happier. When looking for a house, a friend suggested Neighborhood Housing Services’ (NHS) Land Trust program, which offers affordable home ownership opportunities. But a land trust? What does it all mean?
“That means that I own the house, I own the garage, but I do not own the land,” says Dolores. “The land is kept in perpetuity for affordable housing in the community.
“[NHS] organized the entire project… the only I had to do was qualify for a loan, come up with the down payment and do things like choose what kinds of wood products I wanted in the house, what kind of flooring, that kind of thing… I got to do the fun part.”
