Legendary Jazz Fusion Guitarist Larry Coryell at Nighttown

Sat 5/3 @ 8 & 10PM

Larry Coryell’s name is known to anyone who’s ever had even a tangential interest in jazz guitar.

The now 71-year-old player hit the New York jazz scene in the mid ’60s, just in time to be caught up in the rising jazz/fusion movement which exploded in the late ’60s and early ’70s, when an experimental openness in music encouraged players to reach across genres.

Known for his skill in both electric and acoustic guitar, Coryell’s collaborated with musicians across the jazz spectrum, including Gary Burton, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia, Billy Cobham, and even legendary gypsy jazz violinist Stephane Grapelli.

Following a fallow period from the mid ’80s through the mid ’90s, he’s been on a creative roll, releasing a stream of albums, including last year’s The Lift.

He’s coming to Nighttown accompanied by an impressive lineup: George Benson music director and busy sideman David Garfield, Yellowjackets drummer Will Kennedy, bassist/CWRU educator Kip Reed, who has played with everyone from Donna Summer to Joe Lovano, and St. Louis-based jazz/blues/funk sax player Jim Stevens.

Tickets are $25.
