New York hip-hop producer and performer Large Professor collaborated extensively with rapper Nas, whose 1994 debut Illmatic is considered one of hip-hip’s most influential albums. It’s credited with bringing the genre’s spotlight back to the east coast after west coast groups like N.W.A. stole the thunder for a few years and with offering an especially lyrically detailed picture of urban ghetto life in the midst of a crack epidemic.
Large Professor (William Paul Mitchell) co-wrote and produced several of the album’s tracks including the initial single, “Halftime.”
Large Professor will be in Cleveland 20 years to the day of Illmatic’s release, celebrating that anniversary with a DJ set at the B-Side Liquor Lounge and Arcade. Forrest Getemgump provides the opening set. Local hip-hop promoter Mexie J. Wilson hosts.
Admission is $5.
