Versatile Actress/Singer Nellie McKay Comes Back to Nighttown

Tue 4/1 @ 7PM

Wed 4/2 @ 7PM

Musician/actress/comedian Nellie McKay had a brief brush with the major-label machine when she released her debut album Get Away From Me on Columbia in 2004. Even a cursory listen to the two-disc set revealed an artist too odd, too free-ranging, too uncategorizable to flourish there.

Unlike many artists too unusual to fit a marketing niche, she didn’t just vanish into the recesses of a few adventurous listeners’ CD collections. She picked herself up, brushed herself off, and started to release material on her own label. She’s released a series of albums, including a tribute to Doris Day, placed tracks on film and TV soundtracks, performed onstage including in a Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera, and worked on behalf of progressive causes, including animal rights.

In the process, she’s built up a small but devoted following of fans who delight someone too versatile to be pinned down.

There are enough of them in Cleveland that she’s returning to Nighttown for two nights.

Tickets are $25.
