Sin
But the other sin tax, the one that pays for maintenance of our sports stadia, well, there’s more than one side to that one. You saw the well-funded campaign in support of the sports sin tax kick off this a few days ago in the mainstream media. But this week in Cool Cleveland you’ll hear from the other side in an interview with a couple members of the grassroots Coalition Against The Sin Tax.
If you love The Beatles, and who doesn’t, check out my free talk on The White Album & video at a rehearsal in prep for BW’s Beatles Festival; get ready for movies as Marty interviews CIFF’s Patrick Shepherd for the inside story; Josh covers the book release party for “A is for Akron;” catch our video interview with Mike & Colleen Miller as they break ground on their new Music Box Supper Club; plus a preview of the new Micro Art Space & residency program.
Alex points out 5 things different between Dubliners & Clevelanders, then asks if “bossy” should be banned, while Mansfield celebrates “Blame it on a Black Man Day.” Akron author David Giffels is at Loganberry, night, Mother opens at the Beck, and World Water Day floods the Metroparks. With so much going on, it would not be a sin to use our mobile to navigate it all. –Thomas Mulready

Cool Cleveland speaks with developer Alan Glazen and attorney Peter Pattakos who are part of the group Coalition Against the Sin Tax, which is opposing extending the beer, wine and cigarette tax in Cuyahoga County to fund maintenance of football, basketball and baseball stadia for 20 more years at an estimated $260 million or more. The group is urging voters to say “NO” to Issue 7 at the May 6 election.
Why did the Cuyahoga County Council vote unanimously to put the tax on the ballot? Will our sports teams leave the city or will maintenance of these locally owned sports facilities be charged against our governments’ general funds? And who is this Coalition Against The Sin Tax anyway?

Cool Cleveland correspondent Marty Bielat sat down with CIFF Associate Director Patrick Shepherd and picked his brain on this year’s festival, which opens today. Shepherd gave us some great insights on what to see, where to see it, and how to efficiently navigate the close to 200 films being screened within the coming week.
“This year we’re really doubling down on our neighborhood outreach efforts,” said Shepherd, and boy does he mean it. While the majority of the screenings will be happening at Tower City Cinemas, the festival has doubled the number of films elsewhere, in theatres like Cedar Lee, Capitol Theatre, Shaker Square Cinemas and many more.
For more news and reviews make sure that you stay tuned to CIFF, as well as Cool Cleveland. Thanks again for your time Patrick, and good luck with the festival!

Lots of talk recently about Sheryl Sandberg joining forces with Beyonce and other mega stars to ban the word “bossy” when used to describe girls.
There’s no question that these huge industry names, in business and in entertainment, drive public opinion and, in their own determination, has each earned her position and right to voice this campaign. I have the utmost respect for all of them.
But, who has the right to ban any words?…

During most of February I had the incredible experience to spend my days and nights living in Dublin, Ireland.
It’s no secret that Cleveland has a huge Irish population and, especially my former stomping grounds, Lakewood, followed the heritage of churches and pubs on every corner. With St. Patrick’s Day this month, no doubt, once again, every Clevelander claims Irish roots…
