The Julie Ruin was the name of an album released in 1997 by Kathleen Hanna, whose ’90s band Bikini Kill was one of the key players in the so-called Riot Grrrl movement. That movement was about encouraging women to become involved in rock & roll and to use it as a political tool for their own empowerment.
The outspoken musician went on to form Le Tigre, which incorporated more electronics, in the 2000s before taking a break from band activities due to illness. Then, in 2010, she assembled a band called the Julie Ruin based on her earlier solo release. The Brooklyn-based band released its first album Run Fast last fall.
They’ve now hit the road, and they’ll be at the Beachland Ballroom. New Jersey trio Screaming Females and Akron duo ShiSho open.
Tickets are $15.
