Vocalist, songwriter and bassist Johnette Napolitano was the core of rock group Concrete Blonde. One of those groups that came out of the college or “alternative” rock scene of the mid ’80s, their music was hard to peg. They enjoyed a brief flurry of commercial success with their 1990 album Bloodletting, and the hit “Joey,” which also didn’t do much to define the range of this talented band. But it did imprint on listeners the grave, elegant quality of Napolitano’s voice.
After Concrete Blonde broke up in 1993 (they’ve had a couple of reunions since 2001), Napolitano moved on to a bunch of other projects, including singing for a David Byrne-less version of Talking Heads called the Heads and releasing a solo album in 2007.
In recent years, she hasn’t done a lot with music but she is back on the road with a catalogue to draw on that’s impressive by any standards. She’ll be at the Beachland Ballroom with the Joseph Allen Beltram Duo (Joey Deltram of Goodmorning Valentine) opening.
Tickets are $25.
