Buckwheat Zydeco Will Get @Mahalls20Lanes Crowd Dancing

Sat 3/8 @ 9PM

Stanley Dural Jr., aka Buckwheat Zydeco, is now, at age 66, one of the elder statesmen of Louisiana zydeco music. And while many outstanding practitioners of this distinctive regional music have regular jobs and seldom leave their home state, Dural has carried the zydeco gospel around the world, with frequent tours, TV and NPR appearances, collaborations with artists like Keith Richards, Willie Nelson, and Paul Simon, and a discography of nearly 20 albums in the last 35 years.

Like many of the generation of zydeco performers who came of age in the ’70s and ’80s, Dural initially turned away from this music of his parents’ generation in favor of R&B and funk. But the sheer infectiousness and joy of the accordion-driven dance music drew him back in. And like many of his contemporaries he infused the traditional music with his own funky spin.

But whether the music is strictly traditional or updated with a contemporary spin,  you can’t sit still when that accordion starts pumping. You can dance off some of that winter weight when Buckwheat Zydeco and his band arrive at Mahall’s.

Tickets are $18.
