Oh …. sorry.

There are so many people of Slovenian ancestry in Cleveland it’s easy to forget they don’t all speak Slovenian anymore!

What Slovenian band Ansemble Sasa Avesenika is saying here is, “Travel with us across the Canada! The only thing, which you have to do to got the latest news from our tour is, to follow us on a facebook profile and web page!”

And because North America all looks the same from Slovenia, their Canadian tour includes … Cleveland. No, seriously, they know where Cleveland is, and you can tell from the image above they’ve got the right city identified.

They’ve got a good reason to make Cleveland their only U.S. stop on their first American tour. The “Cleveland-style” polka honored in the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame in Euclid is also known as “Slovenian-style,” pioneered by members of Cleveland’s American-Slovenian community like the legendary polka king Frankie Yankovic.

Sašo Avsenik, the leader of the five-year-old Ansambel Sasa Avsenika, is the inheritor of the Cleveland-style polka tradition as well. His grandfather Slavko Avsenik is a legend in Slovenian music, dubbed the “World King of Polkas.” Now 84, he’s a prolific composer whose tunes have been played and recorded by many Cleveland polka bands. So his grandson will be coming home to a virtual family here.

He’ll be playing polkas and waltzes in German, English, and Slovenian, many of them doubtless familiar to Cleveland audiences, when he performs at the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair.
