Eric Burdon & the Animals Play @KentStage

Fri 2/14 @ 8PM

Eric Burdon was swept ashore with his ’60s band the Animals in the first wave of the British invasion. Although many of the bands in that wave had a heavy blues influence, the Animals probably had the heaviest one, animated by Burdon’s cracked and grizzled voice.

Starting in 1964 with “The House of the Rising Sun,” the band enjoyed a five-year streak of hits, although they’d essentially become “Eric Burdon and …” after 1966. By the end of that run, they’d morphed into being a sort of psychedelic band with songs like “San Franciscan Nights” and Monterey” that anthemized the new hippie culture.

The 72-year-old singer has continued to perform in all sorts of styles and collaborations including an EP in 2012 with Cincinnati garage band the Greenhornes. He just released a new album last year called ’Til Your River Runs Dry. His seems far from doing so.

He’ll be at the Kent Stage with whatever group he’s calling the Animals these days.

Tickets are $49-$64.
