East Meets West

East Meets West

The days of East vs. West are over. The sad cliche of Eastsiders never venturing across the Cuyahoga is but a memory now with hotspots like Ohio City and Gordon Square firmly on everyone’s radar. What happened? The Internet. Now, with mobile devices and built-in maps, anyone can find that distant place by clicking a link, complete with directions and ETA. The Heights to Tremont? Not a problem. Lakewood to Akron? Easy. At Cool Cleveland, we never bought into that old cliche, and we couldn’t be happier that technology has trumped the fear of the unknown that had divided our region.

So it’s nice to see Studio Gallery in Ohio City and Gallery One Sixty in Waterloo collaborate on a cross-region exhibition. As is the mash-up of a flea market and a wedding theme at the Screw Factory for Supa Fresh. Experimental percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani even incorporates area musicians into his performance art at MOCA.

We feature the Late Winter Story Festival and CPT’s always-compelling Big Box. Mansfield says hello to OSU’s Dr. Michael Drake and goodbye to P.S. Hoffman. Joe Baur hips us to 3 things all Clevelanders should know about transit, and our friend TL Champion coaches writers on building earth-shattering story climaxes. We’re giving away more t-shirts for using our mobile and take over our Cool Cleveland Instagram account. There’s more than one way to bring all sides together. –Thomas Mulready

I still know a few individuals for whom social media is the equivalent of TV watching or playing video games. And, in some cases it may be.

But the reality of today’s professional universe is that you’re supposed to be present in the virtual world. This is no longer a nice-to-have. It is, in fact, the expectation…
