Nighttown’s “smooth jazz” weekend kicks off with a lady who may be billed as a “scintillating saxtress,” but who has some impressive musical credentials as well.
California saxophone player Jeanette Harris was born into a musical family where she got her start at age 5, first playing piano and guitar, then switching to sax in the 4th grade. Having found her musical “home” so to speak, she excelled in jazz bands in high school to the degree that she won a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston.
There she earned her degree before heading back home to California to launch her career and pay her dues in local clubs. She was a member of the late soul singer Teena Marie’s the year prior to her death in 2010. And she’s released four of her own CDs.
So when you hear her play a mellow, crowd-pleasing version of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do” or Luther Vandross’ “Here and Now,” from last year’s Summer Rain, you know a lot of talent, skill, training, and experience went into making a sound that accessible.
Tickets are $20.
