Psychedelic Night @BeachlandBallroom With Black Angels, Roky Erickson

Sat 2/8 @ 8PM

Dig up a paisley Nehru jacket from somewhere — the psychedelic ’60s are coming to the Beachland Ballroom.

Sharing a bill are three acts that attempt to capture and project the spirit of that colorful, mind-blowing era: the Black Angels, Roky Erickson & Hounds of Baskerville, and the Golden Animals.

Austin’s Black Angels call their music “Drone ’N’ Roll,” which more or less describes what psychedelic pop is all about. Now a decade into their career, the band released their fourth album, Indigo Meadow, last year. Their music combines hypnotic grooves and drones with dislocating shifts of musical scenery.

The band is carrying on in the tradition of a gang of Texas psych bands who had a brief moment in the mid ’60s. The best known and most influential of those was the 13th Floor Elevators, which featured Erickson as their guitarist, vocalist, and frontman.

Following the band’s dissolution in 1969, Erickson spent decades dealing with mental health issues, which he’s overcome enough to play and hit the road again. He’s being back on the current tour by an Austin duo called the Hounds of Baskerville.

The bill is completed by a non-Texas duo called Golden Animals, who perform what they call “desert psych,” partly from the hipster haven of Brooklyn and partly from the California desert.

Tickets are $22.
