It’s hard to come up with a fresh concept for a bar, but Mike and Joe Thomas brought something new to northeast Ohio when they imported a self-service technology they discovered in Atlanta. They opened their first Whistle & Keg location in their hometown of Youngstown in early 2019, followed by a Cleveland location later that year downtown in the former Prospect Music space.
Guests check in with their driver’s license and credit card and are issued a wristband. They then pour themselves as much or as little as they choose from 50 self-serve taps featuring beers, wines and ciders, and pay by the ounce for only what they pour. This gives them a chance to sample a variety of drinks and when they find one they like, pour themselves more, without wasting time and money on drinks they don’t care for.
Whistle & Keg is open until 2am weekends at both locations. It also features entertainment including karaoke nights and comedy.
