Jason Merlene opened Last Exit Books in downtown Kent in 2004 to offer a constantly changing stock of used books, music and movies. The independent carries some new books, including graphic novels but its focus is on intriguing used books from classic literature to poetry to history to art. It’s also become known for its bins of vinyl albums, including classical, jazz, traditional country and pop. The shop buys every day but Sunday.
In 2015, Merlene leased the adjoining space and opened a coffee shop where people can hang out and read their new purchases. It also hosts acoustic music performances.
