It’s not exactly a bombshell to area radio insiders, but popular, long-running Cleveland radio morning man John Lanigan has officially announced his retirement.
Lanigan, whose show airs on WMJI 105.7 FM, will be gone from the Cleveland airwaves at the end of March, following the station’s annual Moondog Ball Saturday March 29.
Lanigan has been an almost constant presence on Cleveland radio since 1970, first with WGAR for 15 and then with WMJI since 1985. Currently, the Lanigan and Malone Show, with co-host Jimmy Malone, airs from 5-10am and has been the top-rated morning show in the market for years.
The 70-year-old host is virtually the last of the big-name Cleveland personalities on the air, who draw ratings based on their presentation and persona. Large corporate radio chains like Clear Channel, which owns WMJI, have increasing moved toward syndicated programming and voice tracking — that is, using a single announcer to broadcast in multiple cities.
